Raising Healthy and Well-Adjusted Boys
Raising healthy and well-adjusted boys is no easy task. Recent studies have shown that compared to girls, boys are more vulnerable to health problems, are more likely to suffer from behavioural issues and have the potential for more learning difficulties. One of the keys to raising well-adjusted boys is to acknowledge these differences and make changes accordingly.
A lot of parents make the mistake of expecting less from their sons than they do of their daughters, particularly in the areas of grooming and cleanliness. Help your son to develop these critical skills of independence so that they can better take care of themselves.
Adolescent boys are just as conscious as girls when it comes to their physical appearance. A compliment coming from a female member of the family can do wonders for their self esteem particularly at a time when they are full of doubts about how they look.
Puberty is a time when boys are looking for male guidance and assurance. Fathers need to be both visible and available at this time to offer thoughts and opinions about issues which may be bothering their son. If the father is absent, then try to seek out another responsible adult male outside the family, to fill the void.
Boys need to be armed with information about their changing body and emotions, just as much as girls do. A lot of this information will be learned from their peers but parents should be involved in this process too, to help sort fact from fiction.
Allow boys to express their emerging masculinity in physical ways. Sports and safe outdoor activities are perfect avenues for allowing them to ‘let off steam’ by showing their increasing physicality and strength.
Boys need to have down time just as much as girls. Encourage them to make reading a regular part of their day. It can be in multiple forms such as the newspaper, magazines or books. This will have the dual benefit of improving their learning skills whilst allowing their brains and bodies valuable re-charging time.
