What would be the next step after finding an Earth like planet?
What if one day,
we will find an Earth like planet (way beyond our solar system), that we will be sure that life is sustainable there.
What would be the next step?
(After we find that planet, then what?)
Explore it how?
If it would be thousands of light years away, how would we explore it?
To be sure, we’d probably need to have spectrographic evidence of water and oxygen in the atmosphere, at the right temperature.
Then we use the spectrograph to look for signs of industialization, like smog in the atmosphere.
Then we us our radiotelescopes to see if it’s at the stage where we could communicate with it.
We’d probably also start work on much larger telescopes and interferometers, to see if we could image the planet directly. With some of the tech on the drawing board now, we might be able to make out continents and oceans.
And I suppose that work on an interstellar probe of some kind would be likely to get more funding. We’d need to find a way to accelerate a probe up to a sizeable fraction of c (the speed of light) to get there in anything approaching a human lifetime. At the speed of our current fastest probe, the nearest star is still over 700 years away.
EDIT: Gravity… that was because the Cardassians were conquerers, not colonizers. All their resources went to weapons and costly invasions.
Also, their system must have been very poor. In our solar system, there’s enough raw materials in the planets and asteroids to take care of everybody for a long time.
